How Does an AC Unit Work?

We need to understand how an AC works before we try to understand the various features offered by the latest and best air conditioners in India. An AC unit has three main components- compressor, condenser and evaporator. The inside unit of an AC is the evaporator while the condenser and compressor are located outside. Using these two components, an AC unit pulls air inside a room, cools it down and throws the cool air back in the room. It does so in three stages:

Stage One: A warm exchanger coil called the evaporator, gathers the warm air from inside the room into the refrigerant. The refrigerant is a cooling gas, which can be continuously changed from liquid to gaseous state and vice versa. After soaking the warmth, the refrigerant vaporises into gas and passes over to the compressor

Stage Two: The compressor puts the gas under high pressure, changing the phase of the gas to a liquid, a process that generates excess heat.  The temperature of the refrigerant has now increased, and it evacuates outdoors with the help of the second set of coils called condenser coils and a second fan.

Stage Three: The gas cools as the energy dissipates outside and is helped further by exhaust fans. The refrigerant, now having lost heat, is converted into a fluid and comes back to the evaporator coil in the indoor unit. With the help of fans, this “cold air” is now pumped back into the room with the help of fans.

This process occurs in a cyclic way repeatedly until the room has cooled down and is stopped when the thermostat detects that the temperature has reached the level set by the user.

What Are the Different Types of Air Conditioner?

Split AC and Window AC are the two main types commonly available for use in India. There’s also a new type of AC called portable AC, which we will discuss briefly.

A. Split AC

This type of ACs are the most widely bought and ranks for the best AC in India. It consists of – i) An outdoor unit with the condenser device and ii) An indoor unit which contains a blower system or evaporative devices. This is why it is called a “split-system” as it is split into two parts.A copper pipe and an electric cable connect these two units. This division of systems lets split AC systems cool different rooms at different temperatures, for each compact system has its own thermostat.

However, these systems can make split air conditioning systems pricier than even a central air conditioning system. Despite the price, Split ACs are energy-efficient, versatile and lot more powerful than Window ACs.They are also easier to install and have more advanced features because the top AC companies keep upgrading them.

B. Window AC

It consists of a single unit housing both the compressor and blower. Placed in a window frame, its blower side is pointed towards the room, and the other side of the unit is outside in open air. These are low cost and generally used to cool a single room. On the other hand, they consume more electricity and make more noise than split AC. If you don’t want your window AC to be burdened by these problems, you should look for “best window AC in India”.

3. Portable AC

Known for their high mobility, these small ACs can cool a small room of up to 150 square feet. They cool down air using a condenser coil and throw out warm air using an exhaust hose pipe. Portable ACs are typically used in situations where building regulation or layout prevent the installation of a window or split AC system. As the name suggests, these are very easy to move and install, making them good choices for a new home.

What Would Be the Right Size and Tonnage of AC for My Room?

Knowing the right size of AC for a room is crucial to making a choice for the best AC in India 2021. You would not want an oversized or undersized air conditioner for your room. An oversized one would waste money when you buy it and continue wasting more every month as the AC burns through more power than needed. It would also have trouble removing humidity from the room by cycling on and off too frequently. An undersized AC would be inadequate for the space it is used in and result in cooling of only one side of the room. This is why it is important to figure out the right capacity of cooling needed, otherwise known as tonnage of an AC.

Ton refers to the amount of heat removed by an AC in one hour and is measured in BTU (British Thermal Units). Historically, a ton was the measure of cooling achieved by using a single ton of ice. Higher BTU refers to higher cooling capacity, hence greater this unit, more is the capacity of an AC to cool a larger area. The relation between tonnage and BTU is given by; 1 Ton= 12000 BTU/hr.

For a room of 100 square foot, you would need a 0.8 Ton AC, 1 Ton for a 150 square foot room, 1.5 Ton for 200 square foot and 2 Ton AC for a 300 square foot room. This is keeping in mind the average summer climate of India. It is advisable to add half a ton to the capacity for temperatures about 45 degrees and another half a ton for installing AC on a room at the top floor. Direct sunlight on your room, insulation and false ceilings, number of residents and window size are more factors that can affect the ideal size of the best air conditioner to buy.

Which Modes of Operation Does My Air Conditioner Have?

Most ACs come with a number of pre-set modes that change fan speeds, temperature settings and humidity content in a room. Some of the common modes present in most ACs are:

  i. Cool Mode

It is the default setting. When the AC is switched on, the compressor takes the heat out of the room and pushes cold air into the room. It lets users adjust the temperature settings using the remote.

ii. Dry Mode in Split ACs

It draws moisture from the air and empties the accumulated water through a drainpipe. It doesn’t cool the air, instead of reducing the excess humidity of the room.

  iii. Fan Mode

This starts the fan on the AC without starting the compressor. It can be used on cool days instead of using the fan and save electricity.

  iv. Sleep Mode in AC

It is a special setting present in most AC, including the best AC in India that helps increase the temperature of the room by 0.5 or 1 degree every hour and keep the fan speed slow for silent operation. It keeps on increasing the temperature of the room gradually till set morning time.

  v. Turbo Mode

It increases cooling for a brief period of time by running the compressor and fan at maximum speed. It also operates the air conditioner at maximum power consumption.

Reciprocating or Rotary Processor- Which AC Compressor Is the Best?

The most vital component of an AC, the compressor compresses the refrigerant at extremely high pressure to change its phase to liquid at high temperature. This causes the refrigerant to absorb heat from the room and pass through the condenser to the evaporator coils, losing heat to the outside. A damaged compressor kills any air conditioner making it nearly worthless; as such, it is crucial to understand which one of these two compressors would be more appropriate for the best AC in India 2021.

  i) Reciprocating Compressor

Like a car engine, it works with cylinders and pistons. These move in a back and forth motion, compressing the releasing the cooling gas. It is the most common compressor found in most ACs and is, therefore, easy to maintain and easily disassembled. It can also be arranged in several ways to create extremely high pressure. Its biggest disadvantage is its noise and vibration which comes from the operation of many pistons and cylinders. It is also less powerful than its counterpart- rotary compressor.

  ii) Rotary Compressor

It has two motors that turn in the opposite directions, causing the air trapped in between to compress. It is ideal for use by businesses and industries as rotary compressors can operate under a wide range of power and pressures. It also creates less noise and vibration than its counterpart as it contains less moving parts. On the other hand, this makes it not very useful for domestic use as it works better with continued use and lasts longer. It is also too costly for most buyers and therefore, not the choice of compressor for the best air conditioner in India.

What Are the Advantages of an Inverter AC?

In a conventional air conditioner, the temperature of a room is controlled by a thermostat, which shuts off the compressor as the temperature reaches the desired level. Only the fan continues running till the temperature rises back again. Then, the compressor begins to run at full capacity again. Thus, we can conclude that the compressor either stays off or runs at full capacity leading to excessive power consumption.

In case of an inverter AC, the compressor stays on all the time. More power is supplied when required by the compressor while power is reduced when the compressor needs less power. This has the following advantages:

  1. Energy Efficiency – There are several factors that cause inverter ACs to have less power consumption than ordinary air conditioners by 30% to 40%.
  2. The Variable– speed compressor receives power according to its need. This means getting less power when required instead of staying at its maximum, unlike conventional ones.
  3. Non-inverter ACs draw the maximum power when it is switched on due to high load. This does not happen with an inverter AC which stays switched on indefinitely.
  4. Quieter Operations – As a compressor makes the most noise in an AC, the best inverter AC in India makes the least amount of noise due to not requiring switching on the compressor. You would also not hear the loud start and stop noises as it does not quickly turn off and on like a non-inverter AC.
  5. Longer Life Span –As the compressor of a non-inverter AC constantly turns off and on, it generates wear and tear on it, leading to a shorter life span than its counterpart.
  6. Environment Friendly –As less energy gets wasted with an inverter air conditioner, it is greener.

Which Condenser Coil Material Is Better for My Air Conditioner?

A condenser coil converts refrigerant from gaseous to liquid phase and vice versa. Both copper and aluminium coils can do the same job, but there are some differences in their durability, heat transmission capability and resistance to corrosion. Some key differences between both are discussed in the following.

  A. Heat Transfer

Copper has better heat transfer ability than aluminium. This makes ACs with copper tubing better at cooling and energy-efficient and, thus, the choice of material for best AC in India 2021.

   B. Corrosion

Both copper and aluminium coils are susceptible to corrosion. Copper coils can have for micary corrosion, which can be avoided by regular cleaning. It is economical to repair and use damaged coils. Aluminium coils are susceptible to galvanic corrosion, which are harder to avoid and clean. Damaged aluminium coils are harder to repair, requiring new ones most times.

   C. Maintenance

Coil mounted in an air conditioner needs regular cleaning as they get damaged from hot and harsh weather conditions. Aluminium coils are weak and have to kept covered and strong cabinet. This makes cleaning aluminium coils a long and tedious process which makes servicing these ACs more costly. Copper coils, on the other hand, are strong enough to bear most weather conditions and are less hassle to service.

   D. Coil Strength

Copper coils are stronger than aluminium and are easier and less costly to repair when damaged. All the best air conditioners in India 2021 have copper coils. Aluminium coils often need to be replaced when damaged. Nevertheless, some copper coils are made too thin by some manufacturers; as such, they leak refrigerant and have a short lifespan.

Therefore, we can conclude that copper is the better choice for making conductor coils. The only reason aluminium is used by manufacturers is to cut costs, which allows them to sell pricier AC models at a lower price.

What Types of Refrigerants Do AC Have?

Refrigerant is the cooling gas in an AC and changes phase from gas to liquid and vice versa to conduct heat out the room. Various types of refrigerants have been used in fridges and air conditioners over the years. Some of them were banned due to causing too harm to the environment.

  i) Choloroflurocarbons or CFC

Commonly known as Freon, this was a common refrigerant used before the 1990s before getting banned due to causing irreparable damage to our ozone layer.

  ii) Hydrochlorofluorocarbons or HCFC

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons or HCFCs, replaced Freon in the 1990s and 2000s as it caused less global warming than CFCs, which also caused the formation of a hole in the ozone layer. Today 50-60% of air conditioners in India use HCFCs like R-22, which causes global warming and releases chlorine into the atmosphere. That is why the Indian Government plans to phase out HCFCs by 2030.

  iii) Hydrofluorocarbons or HFC

To remove chlorine from the environment, a new type of refrigerant was introduced called Hydrofluorocarbons. These still cause global warming but do not cause depletion of the ozone layer. There are three types of HFCs in use today: R410A, R32 and R134, of which R410A is the most commonly used. R32 has the least global warming potential of the three.About 20% to 30% of air conditioners in India use HFCs. The Indian Government plans to phase it out after a few years after phasing out HCFCs completely.

  iv) Hydrocarbons or HC

These are the most environment-friendly refrigerants available on the market. There are two types of HCs available today: R290 and R600A. Also known as Green refrigerants, these are completely halogen-free, have the lowest global warming potential and no ozone depletion potential. They are also more energy-efficient than other refrigerants, making them the choice of refrigerants for the best air conditioner for home.

Green refrigerants are clearly the best choice for those wanting air conditioners with high energy efficiency and low global warming potential. They could also be well-worth their price tag as older refrigerants might get banned in a few years.

How Do I Know if My AC Is Energy Efficient?

There are several ratings and measurement systems to know the energy efficiency of an AC. These are:

EER or Energy Efficiency Ratio

It’s an essential rating to judge the efficiency of an air conditioner. The greater is this ratio, the more effective is an AC. It is measured as the amount of heat (in BTU) removed per hour divided by the power input (in watts). BTU is British Thermal Units and refers to the amount of energy needed to heat 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.

BEE Star Ratings

BEE Star Ratings are given on appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, geysers etc by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Ministry of Power in India. These are star labels from one to five given on appliances. Only the best AC in India 2021 for home would have five stars, being extremely energy efficient and likely to keep your electricity bills low. In the case of ACs, power consumption and efficiency are tested at 50% and 100% capacities. This value is then extrapolated to the climate conditions in different seasons. In 2016, BEE rating of air conditioners was switched to ISEER to calculate star ratings for Indian climate conditions. It has then been updated a few times, with the five stars rated AC falling to a 3 star one in one/two years.

Star ratings are a good and easy-to-read indication of energy efficiency of an appliance.

Co-efficient of Performance

Otherwise known as COP, the coefficient of performance is the amount of heat removed by an AC in Watts, divided by the power consumption of the device, also in Watts. The higher is this number for an air conditioner, the more energy-efficient it is. The relation between COP and EER is given by:

EER = 3.412 X COP

What Does ISEER Mean on an AC?

ISEER is the Indian variation of SEER. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is the ratio between the total amount of heat removed by an AC to the power consumed by it. In other words, it is the ratio between Cooling Seasonal Total Load (CSTL) and Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption (CSEC). CSTL is the estimated total amount of heat removed by an AC as it cools a room. CSEC is the total energy consumption of an air conditioner unit as it operates.

This number varies considerably between seasons and also depends on both the external and internal temperature of a room. This difference is high in winter seasons, where the AC is operated less, and the temperature is much lower compared to the summer season. This difference also changes a lot in various countries and, thus, there is no universally accepted number for SEER. India’s own modified version is the ISEER rated for the Indian climate. This number is then used to provide star ratings for various models of air conditioners. The ranges of ISEER for star ratings are given below:

  • 1 Star – 3.10 to 3.29
  • 2 Star –3.30 to 3.49
  • 3 Star – 3.50 to 3.99
  • 4 Star –4.00 to 4.49
  • 5 Star –4.50 Onwards

What factors determine energy consumption of my air conditioner?

Listed below are some of the top factors that affect the energy consumed by an AC:

  i) Temperature Profile of Your City

Geography is the major determiner of temperature, even in different places of the same country. That is why even the best split AC in India would consume a lot of power to bring down the temperature in a hotter city than in a cooler city. Humidity is another factor affecting power consumption. Removal of water from a room depends upon the run-time of the compressor. As such, oversized ACs are terrible in humid climates as the compressor runs for shorter cycles.

   ii) Room Size

A bigger room has more air; hence the time needed for a smaller AC to remove heat and humidity is longer. An air conditioner that has larger tonnage than necessary would likewise be inappropriate as it would consume too much power in a small room and struggle to change the humidity.

iii) Number of People in a Room

The human body emits heat. Therefore, more people in a room require higher tonnage, or maybe even more than one AC, to remove the extra heat. For example, a class of 40 students in a 150 square foot room would require two 2 Ton air conditioners. Even for a large family seated in that same room, just one 2 Ton ACs would have been more than adequate.

  iv) Colour of a Room

A dark coloured room with dark coloured curtains would need more power to cool the room.

  v) Electronics and electrical appliances

Bulbs emit heat as well as light, and all electrical appliances generate heat. Thus, switching on more lights in your room heats it up and drives up the electrical consumption of the AC.

What Various Types of Air Filters Can an AC Have?

Most ACs today have some kind of air filters installed where the air returns, though the quality of filtration is much higher in best AC for home. This cleanses the air in the room, removing solid contaminants like pollen, dust, smoke and grease. As the indoor environment gets more polluted and we spend more time indoors, filters in AC become more essential. Here is a list of various types of air filters in ACs:

  i) Electrostatic Filters–It uses electricity to attract dust particles. The magnetic effect of the current attracts dust particles and debris and accumulates it in the filters. These filters have a lifelong warranty as long as they are cleaned on a regular basis. These are very cost-effective and allow hassle-free cleaning.

ii) Pleated Air Filters–These are better than fibreglass filters as it offers larger surface area and more fibre per square cm to filter more effectively.

iii) Fibre Glass – These are the least expensive and basic filters for an AC, but they are better than nothing.

iv) Nano-silver filters–These are effective germ killers as the silver content in these filters reacts chemically with microbes like bacteria, killing them.

  v) PM 2.5 filters–PM 2.5 filters available on the best air conditioners in India 2021, are designed to trap particulate matter or PM. PM is the amalgamation of liquid and the smallest particles caused by air pollution and fossil fuels. PM filters comprise of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane and can trap microparticles effectively, saving you from chronic illnesses caused by PM.

vi) HEPA filters – These are the best filters available and can capture 99.97% of smallest particles in the air. It can stop any microbes and larger particles like tiny dust, debris, dust particles and allergens from indoor air. It is, thus, the first choice of doctors and recommended for patients suffering from allergies. However, it is very expensive.

What Fan Speed Should I Run on My Air Conditioner?

The fan in an AC circulates cold air around the room, allowing faster cooling in all corners of the room. ACs have a bunch of pre-set modes which vary the fan speed for appropriate cooling. These are modes like cool mode, dry mode, fan mode and turbo mode, which varies the temperature and humidity in a room.

All ACs regardless if they are the best air conditioner to buy, also have two options for fan settings- i) On mode – which keeps the fan constantly running regardless if the AC is running in cooling mode and ii) Auto mode which switches on the fan during cooling cycles. It helps extend the life of AC motors but also results in less filtration as air can grow stagnant in between the cooling cycles.

Do I Need a Dehumidifier on My AC?

ACs typically have a dry mode (also known as dehumidify mode) where the AC does not blow cool air instead reducing the humidity in a room or area. When switched on the fans and inner components of the AC keep running but do not blow cold air. Air passes through the device, moisture accumulates on the evaporator, and dry air exits the device, reducing the overall humidity of the room.

The dry mode also consumes less power than the default cooling mode. Moreover, you can switch it on without having to power off the unit or wait for some time.

The dehumidify mode on even the best inverter AC in India, is not the same as a standalone dehumidifier. It does not remove a lot of the moisture in a room or dry thedamp areas.

What Other Special Features Should I Be Looking for When Buying an AC?

Some of the other special features provided by the latest and best air conditioners in India are given as follows:

  i) Dual Inverter Technology

These are marketed as having double efficiency of a single inverter AC. Available for only a few select models, these ACs functions with less noise and cools faster. Because of the compressor running at very low speeds most of the time, this type of AC is the most energy-efficient on the market.

  ii) Blue Fin/Gold Fin Technology

Harsh temperature and humidity cause corrosion in A/C units which make them require maintenance and repairs.Blue fin and Gold fin technology are anti-corrosive paint used on the few best AC in India, to overcome the corrosion problem and increase the life of air conditioners. Gold paint does not easily rust but is pricier compared to blue fin technology.

  iii) Timers

A useful feature available on most ACs, this lets you use the timer function while you are asleep. The timer shuts off the AC unit after a selected amount of time.

  iv) Auto Clean Mode

ACs need to be cleaned on a regular basis, to increase their life expectancy. Top brands have come up with an auto-clean functionality where the AC cleans its own filters using a variety of in-built techniques and methods. Brushes and indoor blowers are used for this purpose depending on the brand and model of the AC.

  v) Stabilizer Free Operations

Load sheddings and power cuts are common in India; that is why appliances are susceptible to getting damaged by voltage fluctuations. Many premium ACs provide in-built mini stabilisers allowing them to function across a range of voltage.

  vi) App Control of ACs

With a growing demand for IoT technology to be built into appliances, many top brands have come with Wi-Fi connectivity for air conditioners, including Wi-Fi Direct. With Wi-Fi Direct, you wouldn’t even need a router as you can directly connect to the AC using smartphones and tablets.

  vii) 4D Airflow

New and best AC in India 2021, from brands like LG, BlueStar, Carrier, Hitachi etc have 4-way swing functions to blow cool air in multiple directions. Unlike conventional ACs which only swings up and down, these air conditioners can swing up, down, right and left, which ensures uniform cooling across the room.

Modern air conditioners come with a host of state-of-art technologies that have optimised comfort and cooling. With many obsolete and environment unfriendly features being done away with, even low-medium cost ACs have changed considerably for the better. Pricier models feature everything from letting you control the AC using a smartphone to smart sensors that stop working to save energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

The AC market in India is very competitive; so, it would be unfair to single out any one brand as the best. Daikin, Carrier, Blue Star are specialist in the manufacture of AC equipment. Brands like Panasonic, LG, Voltas, Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Samsung etc manufacture electrical appliances other than ACs and have builta worldwide reputation. There are also reputed Indian brands like Onida and Godrej.

All brands selling some of the best ac in India have local service centres. Brands like Carrier and Daikin have made arrangements with them. Others have their own service centres, and personnel distributed all over the country. It is still a good idea to check customer reviews for feedback on their services before investing in a particular brand.

Yes. You can buy an air conditioner online from reputed eCommerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart with no worries. They have excellent after-sales services and address customer grievance immediately. You can get both hard and soft copy of bills from purchases. Moreover, they give discounts and great deals from time to time, especially during festivals.

There are many good non-inverter air conditioners in the market. However, most people do not buy an AC every year, so it is a long term investment. As even the best inverter AC becomes more affordable, it’s better to have a flexible budget to be able to afford it. You can still buy a non-inverter AC if you plan to use it for less than 4 hours/day.

Every AC has a limit of voltage operations, which is printed on the AC label. You should check if your local electric supply has voltage fluctuations beyond these limits. If your AC is in danger of being damaged from fluctuations, it is best to buy a stabiliser for the AC. It is relatively inexpensive and keeps the costly AC safe.

The indoor air has a lot of dust and bacteria that can accumulate when using an AC. As the doors and windows remain closed while using an AC, it also keeps circulating the stale air. All the best air conditioners in India have dust and bacterial filters to trap these ingredients from circulation. This ensures that you have clean and pure air to breathe.
